Canines by Design is focusing on home and yard enrichment, office policy creation and seminars for dog friendly business, and... helping community planners develop dynamic parks that offer enrichment and safe spaces for canines while maintaining its original “multipurpose” use as a community green space and family area."

Since graduation from Bergin University, I moved back to Canada and set up shop in Victoria, British Columbia. I am the Owner/Operator of Canines By Design and CEO of Canadian Canines By Design, Inc. The concept of Canines By Design was created through my Master’s project, which through academic research and field work in Victoria, I decided to create a business whose primary mandate was to give a voice to canines in our community, educating the public with up-to-date literature and techniques, and helping to spread the knowledge found in academic circles and the service dog world with the general public and those that might not get exposed to the same level of information.
The focus of Canines By Design is three fold. The first is educating the human component of the community through developmental education workshops, one-on-one sessions, and through social media outlets (Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Wordpress, etc.). The second component utilizes the information and knowledge I gained through my academic studies at Bergin University, where I apply the training techniques used to teach and educate service dog hopefuls to help teach the canines in our community through general behaviour (e.g. sit, stay, manner, walking skills) and custom training (e.g. recycling bottles at the house, helping with certain tasks, etc.). The third component is very unique to Canines By Design, and surrounds the concept of “Safe Space” creation. As canines become further integrated into our communities and workplaces we need to take their welfare into account to ensure that their basic needs are being met, that they are still living enriched lives without undue stress and fear, and that their environments are in a sense “puppy-proof” so that we can ensure their safety. Right now, Canines by Design is focusing on home and yard enrichment, office policy creation and seminars for dog friendly business, and if given the opportunity, helping community planners develop dynamic parks that offer enrichment and safe spaces for canines while maintaining its original “multi-purpose” use as a community green space and family area.
I love being able to contribute to both the human and the canine side of my community through education and positive experiences. The world of canines is changing very quickly and it is up to us as the new generation of academically trained as well as practically trained professionals to continue to teach people about the human-canine bond, the benefits and knowledge we currently know, and how by we can be better caregivers to them.
As a Master’s student at Bergin I was offered a very unique opportunity to receive both a high level academic education focusing on canines and also hands on experience working with service dogs. Bergin U has an amazing network of staff, volunteers, and faculty and through this we as students are able to be taught by some of the leading minds in the field of canine psychology, ethology, behavior, development, genetics, anatomy, history, ethics and welfare. There is no other University I know of in which canines can be studied as a whole animal in such a well rounded manner, in both hands on practical sense, from a historical and also a theoretical perspective. Bergin University is like a family as well and even though I am graduated now and alumni are spread all around the world, we still continue to communicate and support each other through our experiences and endeavors.
