To receive financial aid, a student must meet the following basic federal requirements. You may be asked to provide documentation to confirm your eligibility. If so, you will be given specific instructions of what documentation you will need to provide. We will not be able to provide you with a financial aid award offer until these eligibility requirements have been confirmed.
Citizenship Eligibility statuses are:
A U.S. citizen or national
A U.S. permanent resident
A citizen of the Freely Associated States: the Federated States of Micronesia and the republics of Palau and the Marshall Islands
An other eligible non-citizen.
Name, Social Security & Date of Birth Matches - The name, Social Security Number and date of birth that you provide on the FAFSA must match records of the Social Security Administration.
Selective Service - Men of ages 18 through 25 are required to register with the Selective Service System. If you are over the age of 25, you must have already registered, as the Selective Service will register only males age 18 through 25.
Selective Service EXEMPTIONS - For information on those not required to register, or on the registration process itself, go to the Selective Service web site.
FAILURE TO REGISTER - If you are over the age of 25 and did not register with Selective Service when you were required to, contact the Financial Aid Office for information on options for resolving your situation.
Defaults & Overpayments - Generally, a person is not eligible for federal student aid funds if he/she is in default on a federal loan or owes an overpayment on a federal grant or loan, and has not made a repayment arrangement for the default or overpayment.
Veteran Status - If you report on the FAFSA that you are a veteran, we must be able to confirm this with the Department of Veterans Affairs, or you may be asked to provide a copy of your honorable discharge papers (DD Form 214).
Drug Convictions Disqualification - A federal or state drug conviction can disqualify a student from receiving federal financial aid, such as the Subsidized and Unsubsidized Direct Loan and the Pell Grant. If you receive financial aid during a period of ineligibility because you did not report your conviction correctly on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you must repay any funds received after the loss of eligibility. If you become convicted after having filed the FAFSA for an academic year, you must update your response to the drug conviction question using FAFSA on the Web at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.
Dependency Status - When you fill out the FAFSA, you will answer a series of questions to determine whether you're considered a "dependent" or "independent" student. The federal Department of Education has certain criteria to determine dependency status. If you are under age 24, you are most likely dependent for financial aid purposes regardless of whether or not you live with your parents, whether or not you are claimed by your parents on their tax form, and whether or not you are receiving any financial support from your parents.
Policy For the Return of Federal Title IV Funds (R2T4)
The US Department of Education requires institutions to apply the Return to Title IV Funds policy for students withdrawing from a university who receive Title IV financial aid. The Title IV programs that Bergin College students may qualify for and use include: Federal Pell Grants, Direct Loans, and Direct Loans. For more information click the link below:
POLICY FOR THE RETURN OF FEDERAL TITLE IV FUNDS (R2T4)
Complete details about the criteria for being considered independent can be found in the "Before Beginning a FAFSA" section of the FAFSA web site, studentaid.gov/ If you're considered dependent, you must report your parents' income and assets on the FAFSA, as well as your own. If you're independent, you'll report only your own income and assets (and those of your spouse, if you're married). In highly unusual cases, the Financial Aid Office can determine that a student who doesn't meet the above criteria should still be treated as an independent student. If you have reviewed the criteria for independent status and believe you may fall into this category, contact your Financial Aid Representative.

Applying for Financial Aid
Eligibility Students please note: Federal and state regulations require that students receiving financial aid have a responsibility to make satisfactory academic progress toward a degree or credential objective in order to remain eligible for financial assistance. See the catalog for more information.
The first step in applying for financial aid is to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can complete a FAFSA online at FAFSA® Application | Federal Student Aid using Bergin College's federal school code of 041763.
FAFSA on the WebFAFSA on the Web is a fast and error-free way to file the application. It does not require you to download or install any software. FAFSA on the Web contains a Pre-Application Worksheet, which you should print and complete before entering the FAFSA answers online. As you are entering answers online, there are edits and prompts to assist you in correctly completing the online application. You will need to have access to a computer with a connection to the Internet to file your application electronically at https://studentaid.gov/. After all of the required information has been entered, you and your parents (if applicable), can electronically sign the application using your FSA ID.
Your FSA IDYour FSA ID can be used each year to electronically sign your FAFSA and to access your U.S. Department of Education records online. If classified as a dependent student, a parent will also be required to get a FSA ID in order to sign the FAFSA electronically. For more information or to obtain your FSA ID, go to https://studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/filling-out.
Your Parent's FSA IDThe parent’s FSA ID can be used each year to electronically sign your FAFSA if you are a dependent student and to access their U.S. Department of Education records online. Parents that have a FSA ID number up front before the FAFSA is filed can sign the FAFSA electronically, which will expedite the processing of your application. Also, having your parent sign the FAFSA at the time the application is filed, instead of printing a signature page and mailing it in, will reduce the possibility of your FAFSA being rejected. A rejected FAFSA application due to missing parent signature will cause a delay in getting a financial aid award offer. For more information or to obtain a parent FSA ID, go to https://studentaid.gov/.
Don't Share ItYour FSA ID not only serves as your legal signature, it provides access to your personal records, so don’t give your FSA ID to anyone. Be sure to remember it, because you'll use the same FSA ID for future electronic FAFSAs or renewal FAFSAs, and to access your federal student aid records. If for some reason you lose your FSA ID, you can always request a duplicate FSA ID at https://studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/filling-out.
Bergin College’s Federal School CodeIn order for the Federal Processor to send your application to Bergin College, you must include our Federal School Code on your FAFSA. BUCS’s Federal School Code is 04176300.
Remember to Apply Every YearEach year you must renew your FAFSA for the upcoming school year. Renew your FAFSA beginning January 1st of each year, at https://studentaid.gov/
Renew FAFSA on the WebIf you filed a FAFSA online the previous year, you can file a Renewal FAFSA online. This way you will have fewer questions to answer, because most of the Renewal FAFSA will be filled in with information you provided the previous year. You'll need to update any information that has changed and fill in a few new answers.
The Paper FAFSAIf you don’t have Internet access, you can obtain a paper FAFSA by calling 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). Students and parents may request up to three copies of the paper application. Mail the FAFSA in the pre-addressed envelope that’s in your FAFSA packet. Make sure you (and your parents if applicable) sign the FAFSA. The FAFSA is not processed or considered valid without the required signatures. However, we strongly encourage you to complete the FAFSA on the Web instead of the paper FAFSA.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) sets out requirements that are designed to protect the privacy of students and their parents of record. Federal regulations prohibit the disclosure of a student's financial aid information to anyone other than the student without the student's written permission except for the parent of a "dependent" student (if that parent provided financial information and his/her social security number on the FAFSA, and claimed the student on their income taxes), a campus representative, or other designated officials.
The Financial Aid Office will only disclose information as is allowed by FERPA. We will not disclose a student's information to a parent (if the student is independent), to a spouse of the student, or any other person unless allowed by FERPA or designated in writing by the student. To authorize disclosure to specific individuals, including parents and spouse, make sure you have downloaded and returned the Student Information Disclosure Release Form for the appropriate financial aid year and submit it to the Financial Aid Office. Any changes to the form must also be submitted in writing.
