HYBRID COURSES SPRING SEMESTER 2020
March 14, 2020
TO: All Students, Staff and Faculty
Dear Bergin University Community:
Bergin University of Canine Studies is in the process of receiving approval to move from offering face-to-face courses to temporarily offering hybrid courses. Administration is working with CourseKey to provide online live sessions rather than face-to-face courses. To be clear, our campus remains safe, and while we continue to have zero presumptive or confirmed cases of COVID-19 on or related to our campus, we are bolstering our preventative and social distancing measures. Please note the following:
Information changes on a daily basis. As the situation changes, the school will make adjustments and notify students and faculty. Again, the campus has no presumptive or confirmed cases of COVID-19. Staff and faculty are available via email should students have questions.
Please make sure to read all Bergin College of Canine Studies updates and remain in contact with instructors and/or staff.
Thank you for your continued cooperation, empathy, kindness and support. We are a small, tight-knit community, which allows us to assist one another and transition smoothly during this national emergency.

To be clear, our campus remains safe, and while we continue to have zero presumptive or confirmed cases of COVID-19 on or related to our campus, we are bolstering our preventative and social distancing measures. Please note the following:
- Students are asked to attend classes on Monday, March 16, 2020 so as to be advised of future class schedules. All face-to-face classes on campus will remain in effect through Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Please follow your instructor’s guidelines regarding any field trips.
- Effective, Monday, March 23, 2020, a hybrid course offering will commence and continue through Friday, May 1, 2020. Lecture courses will be held via CourseKey live sessions. Courses requiring dog training and physical activity will be held on campus, either inside or outside as weather permits. There will be smaller groups of students on campus at all times so that social distancing can be practiced. Students will receive specific instructions regarding dog training courses and the new online live session courses when on campus on Monday, March 16, 2020.
- Students are expected to continue training and caring for your assigned Bergin dog. Please keep outside contact to a minimum and practice social distancing.
- Graduating students will be kept updated if the school must make any further changes to holding a “closed” graduation ceremony.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information
March 12, 2020
TO: All Students, Staff and Faculty
Dear Bergin College Community:
In order to keep our community updated and to keep unsubstantiated information to a minimum, the College would like to clarify the temporary closing of Sonoma State University. SSU is suspending classes for three days to allow faculty time to prepare to teach remotely, should the need arise.
SSU will resume all face-to-face classes on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 when students return from their spring break. The SSU campus remains open along with the residence halls and dining areas during the three-day suspension.
The operational status of the Bergin campus currently remains unchanged, and Sonoma County schools remain open.
The public is being advised to avoid large gatherings of more than 250 people. Please remember that this would include the large universities with thousands of students living and attending on campus. Bergin College has less than 50 people on campus at any time, however, the executive team is monitoring the movements of SSU and Santa Rosa Junior College. The executive team is continually monitoring the situation, discussing alternatives with our accreditor, reviewing how changes will affect different student groups (financial aid, GI Bill), and is meeting on a regular basis to look at all options should we need to make adjustments to the current learning environment.
Graduation is scheduled for May 2, 2020. By end of March, the College will make a decision as to whether or not the graduation ceremony will be held. Please make sure to advise family or friends who will be attending from out of the area that there is a possibility this event will be cancelled.
Some students are more anxious than others about COVID-19, and there are students and employees with compromised immune systems on campus. Please respect their needs and support one another during this time – both physically (by washing your hands, covering your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, and staying home if you have a fever) and emotionally (by respecting other’s needs and not mocking fellow students or employees).
Please continue washing your hands frequently and practice social distancing. Even if you are not worried about the virus, please respect the needs and worries of your classmates. Spray bottles of 70 percent isopropyl alcohol have been made available to students both on campus and for home use. Students can spray a paper towel and wipe their dog’s coat if the dog comes into contact with an unknown member of the public.
There are 18 public health labs in California that are testing for COVID-19. Sonoma County Public Health is one of those labs. The Richmond Laboratory will provide diagnostic testing within a 48- hour turnaround time (State of CA website).
If you do not have health insurance and need medical assistance, you should call a community health center near you. A list of sites can be found at https://sonomacounty.ca.gov/Health/Disease- Control/Community-Clinics/.
Please continue to be personally responsible for your health and hygiene and continue supporting one another during this time. Stay healthy and remember to communicate with your instructors and administrative staff.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information
March 4, 2020
TO: All Students, Staff and Faculty
Dear Bergin College Community:
Local and national news is reporting about cases of COVID-19 spreading throughout the United States. While these developments may be concerning, they are not cause for alarm. There are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Bergin College of Canine Studies. In preparation for a potential problem necessitating a response, we will continue to monitor the situation closely and follow the guidance of local, state and federal public health and emergency management agencies, as well as other local colleges.
We encourage all campus members to take some basic precautions and be personally responsible for your health:
Symptoms and Transmission:
Symptoms may be flu-like, ranging from mild to serious. Severe illness is more common in people with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems, as well as older adults. Symptoms include:
Treatment:
Students should seek medical attention when having symptoms to receive supportive care to help relieve these symptoms. The CDC does not recommend the use of face-masks for general prevention from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Regular hand washing provides better protection.
Anxiety:
Any new disease can be frightening, especially coupled with the dramatic media coverage. Recently the County of Sonoma has declared a Local Public Health Emergency as well as a Local Emergency in response to concerns about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). These proclamations will allow county officials to better prepare for the possibility of a community outbreak of the virus. This allows the county to request funding quickly and allows a partial activation of the County Emergency Operations Center to support necessary activities. There have been two cases of COVID-19 in the County, but both patients are isolated in a hospital. The most recent is a presumptive positive case in a resident returning from recent international travel. A presumptive positive case is defined as likely to be positive of COVID-19. The CDC will conduct another test to confirm the diagnosis. (source: County of Sonoma). The chances of you becoming ill due to the coronavirus are much lower than with the standard flu in the U.S. If you are struggling with anxiety regarding the virus, please contact your physician to seek guidance. Bergin staff and faculty are here to support you but cannot provide therapeutic support.
We are asking students who have left the area for spring break, to advise student services ([email protected]) where you have travelled. If you have symptoms, please see a doctor prior to returning to campus.
